Final Blog- Music and Emotions

Music has been apart of our lives since the moment we were born. Family members singing us to sleep with lullabies, learning our ABC’s, watching educational cartoons growing up, to that first song we listen to in our first car. Music has an impact our emotions and memories. According to an article on PychCentral,”More than any other stimulus, music has the ability to conjure up images and feelings that need not necessarily be directly reflected in memory.” This may be the answer as to why we can feel the message that the singer is delivering with certain songs. For example, the video that I am about to link is about losing a loved one. I know I have posted this song in one of my previous blogs, but the message is just so meaningful to me and it works perfectly with my thesis.

One More Light sung by Linkin Park. Written by Mike Shinoda and Eg White. Released May 19, 2017. USA.

An article on Thought Economics quoted Schopenhauer who said, “The inexpressible depth of music… easy to understand and yet so inexplicable, is due to the fact that it reproduces all of the emotions of our innermost being, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain… Music expresses only the quintessence of life and of its events, never these themselves.” One More Light always gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. I can also hear and feel Chester Bennington’s pain over his loss of a loved one while he was singing this song. The first time I heard this, it was at a funeral for a friend that took his life. Sometimes, the best way to express how you’re feeling is through music, and Chester Bennington gave the perfect depiction of how I felt that day.

Another example for influential music:

Confident sung by Demi Lovato. Written by Demi Lovato, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Max Martin, and Savan Kotecha. Released September 18, 2015. USA.

From the moment the song starts, the beat has got me sucked in and tapping my hands against the steering wheel. Confident by Demi Lovato undeniably puts a pep in my step and I am ready for the day. I feel like I could run a couple miles or lift some weights at the gym for a few hours.

As reported by The Emory Wheel, Confident is Demi’s musical middle finger to critics, haters and anyone who ever doubted her throughout her career.” It’s amazing to feel her passion through the song and her ability to share some of her confidence to those that are listening.

Music is such a powerful tool to let others know that you are not alone; you are not the only one who is feeling like this. There is music for everything. No matter the emotion or event, there is music that will match it’s surroundings. The next time you are at an event, just stop and listen to the music that is playing. How is it making you feel?

My relationship to music has changed drastically over this summer semester. I have learned about the elements of music, which some of them, I learned for the first time. I have never sat down and picked apart songs or looked into the “hidden” meanings for them. This has all been eye opening and challenging for me. I knew that I have always loved music and the effects that it has on me and my everyday life, but I truly did not know how complex music can be. I have had a blast reading my classmates’ blogs and reading their interpretation of the songs that they picked. I like seeing other people’s perspective. It’s educational and enlightening.

Continued Explorations: Music and The Fictive Dream- “Remember Me”

Coco is a visually stimulating roller-coaster ride of emotions constructed by Disney Pixar and released on November 22, 2017.  I went from laughter at Miguel’s interaction with Dante, to shock and awe from the colors of the land of the dead, and lastly to crying near the end.  Disney sure knows how to tug at your heart strings. According to an interview that Deadline held with Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, they were challenged to create/write one song that would have two different meanings depending on which character would be singing. That is when Remember Me came to life. Remember Me was released on November 10, 2017 in the USA.

The first meaning is Ernesto de la Cruz’s rendition of Remember Me. He had an up beat mariachi feel. He was all about putting on the best show. The bigger the better, when it came to Ernesto. Unfortunately, his over the top act became his demise, as shown in the video below.  Ernesto would sing Remember Me at the end of his performance, saying goodbye to his fans.

The second version, is the true version of Remember Me. It’s the heart felt interpretation that Hector meant to sing for his daughter Coco before he left home for work. As stated by Luke Penny, “It was written as a lullaby.” This rendition has more of a melancholy, low melody feel with a solo guitar and Hector’s voice.  Hector loved his daughter Coco, and you can feel the love he has for her with this version.

But wait! There is a third message when Miguel sings Remember Me to his great grandmother Coco when he returns from the land of the dead. In order to save his great great grandfather Hector from disappearing due to being forgotten, Miguel has to get Coco to remember him by singing the sweet lullaby. In this moment, not only did Miguel save Hector, he also brought his family together and demonstrated the importance that music can have. Alright classmates, let the tears commence!

Remember Me shares the message of saying goodbye, whether it be friends or family. Even though we might leave for awhile, we will still remember those that are important to us. In addition, the song plays an important role in rebuilding Miguel’s family to appreciate music again, and allowing Miguel to live his dream of becoming a musician.  Also due to the cultural nature of the film, there is a seriousness of remembering your loved ones. Disney, you did it again!

Music and the Fictive Dream-Mulan

Mulan will forever and always be my favorite movie. Growing up, I never obsessed over the Disney princesses. I wanted to be the strong individual and do the saving, instead of hoping for someone else to come rescue me. Even in my young age, I had a feeling that life didn’t typically fall into Disney’s “happily ever after” routine. Mulan had such an impact on helping me not to be afraid of who I am, and just embrace it, which is why I chose Reflection for this post.

ReflectionMulan. Composer Matthew Wilder. June 2, 1998. USA.

Mulan is Disney’s 36th animated feature that was released in June 19, 1998, and is based from a fable of Hua Mulan. According to an article on Ancients Origins, “The legend of Mulan has been written with many variations, but the plot is always the same: Mulan was washing clothes when she heard that the army was recruiting new soldiers. To save her old and ailing father, Huan Hu, she decided to be recruited as his “son.” She knew that her father was too old and too ill to survive the war, so she decided to disguise herself as a man to go in his place.” To this day, the tale of Hua Mulan is an inspiration to China for her fearlessness and dignity.

Mulan, the brave warrior, sings Reflection at the beginning of the movie when she fails to please the match maker. She is struggling with being the perfect image for a wife and pleasing her family in this manner. Mulan has spunk and does not succumb to societal norms. Despite the consequences of portraying a man in the Chinese army, she still does what she feels is right. She then continues on to saving all of China. Moral message of the story, just be who you are intended to be. Embrace your true self and you can do great things.

During my research, I learned that there is more to Reflection. As reported by Fanpop, the extended addition expresses different feelings that Mulan is having. Such as, “Emphasis on wanting personal freedom from society’s wishes. Bitter about these aforementioned wishes. Bitter about hiding herself.” Mulan expresses concern for her family’s well being in the movie version, but in the extended version, she just wants to be herself regardless of others impression of her.

Reflection is a fusion of contemporary classical and oriental music. Throughout the song, it rises to a crescendo creating a climatic awe inspiring melody. The timbre of the song is soothing and motivating.

Role of the Performer-Pentatonix

Pentatonix is a very popular a ccappela group originating from Texas. “They are widely known for their covers, mostly of modern pop works or Christmas songs.” I very much enjoy their Christmas collection and appreciate the group keeping the original melodies.

Mary, Did You Know. Written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene. Released December 1996. USA.

Growing up in church, I had my fair share of singing in groups, and for me it was challenging to find our harmonies and figuring out whether to go up or down an octave. My teacher at the time told me to just practice all day by humming along to the vacuum cleaner or even the refrigerator. It seemed silly at the time, but I understand the reason behind it. Pentatonix harmonizes so beautifully.

Here is one of the many covers that Pentatonix has performed. This video seems very different from the “typical” style, but I really admire a group stepping out of their comfort zone to dabble in the unknown for them. Even though they are an a ccappela group, I absolutely love that they featured Lindsey Sterling in this video. She is such an amazing violinist.

Papaoutai. Written by Stromae. Release May 13, 2013. Belgium.

Pentatonix is such an outstanding group that has gone from being the opening performance for Kelly Clarkson to making an appearance on Pitch Perfect 2. (They were the Canadian team.)

Musical Trip: Mongolia

Welcome classmates to Mongolia, where I can introduce you to a singing style called throat-singing or Khöömei.

Praise of Gengis Khan sung by Batzorig Vaanchig. Video published Apr 9, 2014. Mongolia.

According to Britannica, “Throat-singing necessitates activating different combinations of muscles to manipulate the resonating chambers of the vocal tract under sustained pressurized airflow from the stomach and chest.” I appreciate how the guttural sound of the singer’s voice gives off a meditative energy. Khöömei is used for spiritual purposes as well as assisting babies to fall asleep, or attempting to control animals. Intangible cultural heritage also states, “The performer imitates sounds of nature, simultaneously emitting two distinct vocal sounds: along with a continuous drone, the singer produces a melody of harmonics.”

During the communist’s rule, Khöömei was not allowed, but once it fell, the teaching was then restored for the future generations. Women are also discouraged to participate in Khöömei, due to superstitious beliefs of “causing infertility or to bringing misfortune to the performers’ menfolk for seven generations.” Thankful for the women who arose to the occasion, regardless of these superstitions and became throat-singers.

Unfortunately, the identity of the singer or the song she is singing is unknown. Video published on Feb 16, 2009. Mongolia.

Khöömei is a beautiful way to express emotion and stories. I am glad I came across this on my search for music around the world.

Evolution of Linkin Park

Growing up, I was a very lost and angry teenager, and Linkin Park’s songs had very emotional messages that really hit home for me. Bleed It Out was definitely my go to song. I don’t want this blog to be sad or depressing; I just want to be informative on how music can speak volumes to those that are struggling. I personally felt at ease when listening to Linkin Park in my teen years, the music was an escape as well as representation of myself at the time.  I admired the screaming, maybe because, I myself wanted to scream, but couldn’t in a sense.  The band is an alternative rock band that could be borderline metal. I found serenity in that. However, I recently listened to their newest album from 2017 and did find that familiarity that I once found so comforting.

Bleed It Out Linkin Park. Written by Joe Hahn, Dave Farrell, Rob Bourdon, Brad Delson, Chester Bennington & Mike Shinoda. August 17, 2007. USA.

I quickly realized that this was not the same band that I remembered and loved so much. It was as if I had found a completely different band using the title of the one I knew. There was no longer a rock or metal component at all. It was soft and warm, almost the exact opposite of how I remembered. Honestly it was unsettling at first, but grew on me in the end. I realized after listening that the messages that were there were still similar and relatable. Specifically the song One More Light as it sends such a strong message to its audience.  It’s enlightening to see a band evolve into a completely different genre.

One More Light by Linkin Park. Written by Joe Hahn, Dave Farrell, Brad Delson, Rob Bourdon, Chester Bennington, Francis Anthony “Eg” White & Mike Shinoda. May 19, 2017. USA.

Bleed It Out is delivering the message of a troubled soul that isn’t being heard and wants to end it all. Whereas, One More Light is illustrating what we have to go through when we lose a loved one by suicide. This song is trying to also speak to those that have passed. Chester Bennington wrote this song due to his friend’s passing. He is trying to tell him that he did matter and that we should cherish every moment that we have with each other.

In comparing these two songs that are 10 years apart we see a major change in the message being delivered. All of Linkin Park’s albums prior the One More Light were similar in the message and the style of music. It changed dramatically in the most recent album, which could tell us something about the song writer Chester Bennington, who unfortunately committed suicide shortly after this album was made.

An article from Rolling Stone wrote, “Bennington poured his experiences into Linkin Park’s songs, which mixed his soul-baring screams with Mike Shinoda’s rapping and the band’s lumbering riffs for a sound that dominated the pop charts for much of the 2000s.” “He had a distinct voice, at once delicate and ferocious,” is Jared Leto’s description of the singer’s voice.

If you sit down and listen to multiple songs and read the lyrics you can follow his struggle and see that he finally was tired of fighting.

Musical Analysis #2-“If You Were Mine”

If You Were Mine by Ocean Park Standoff is an upbeat song that encourages its listeners to at minimum bop along to the beat. It is catchy and draws you in. I personally really enjoy this song because of the beat and the lyrics. It hits home for me because I have been in the predicament that is being relayed throughout the song. The song is about a guy that wants a girl that he doesn’t have. He proceeds to spend the song describing how things would be if they were together and how great it would be. It is relatable to most people because at one point or another we have all been there.

If You Were Mine by Ocean Park Standoff. Written by Samantha Ronson, Pete Nappi, Mathieu Jomphe-Lepine, James Abrahart & Ethan Thompson. April 27, 2018. USA.

Lyrics

[Intro: Ocean Park Standoff & (Lil Yachty)]
If you were mine (ooh)
If you were mine (ooh)

[Verse 1: Ocean Park Standoff]
Left to right, at the lights, we’re speeding down the road
Leave it all, all behind, everything you think you know
You been hurt but I won’t, won’t fix you, you’re not broke
What you are is beautiful to me

[Pre-Chorus: Ocean Park Standoff]
You could go left, but know I’m right
You gotta make, make up your mind

[Chorus: Ocean Park Standoff & (Lil Yachty)]
We could go anywhere, but if we take it there
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
If you were mine (ooh)
If you were mine (ooh)
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh

[Verse 2: Ocean Park Standoff]
Flashing light in your eyes, like fire as it grows
I can fly, no, but I, I never can let go
You been hurt, so have I, yeah, we got scars to show
But I swear, it’s worth it, wait and see

[Pre-Chorus: Ocean Park Standoff]
You could go left, but know I’m right
You gotta make, make up your mind

[Chorus: Ocean Park Standoff & (Lil Yachty)]
We could go anywhere, but if we take it there
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
If you were mine (ooh)
If you were mine (ooh)
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh

[Verse 3: Lil Yachty]
Let me excercise your mind
Forget about the time, just for a minute
Let me take you to a different life
So you can fantasize, just wanna make it
We can go anywhere, to [?] everywhere
Baby, Lil Boat’s a millionaire, no, briefcase, questionnaire
Have you looking so pretty when we ride through the city
I’m the man with the power, now I’m feeling like 50 (Lil Boat)

[Chorus: Ocean Park Standoff & (Lil Yachty)]
We could go anywhere, but if we take it there
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
If you were mine (ooh)
If you were mine (ooh)
You on the other side, I-I can change your mind
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
If you were mine (ooh)
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh
If you were mine (ooh)
Bet I can make you go oh, oh, oh, oh

Rhythm

The rhythm of the song is upbeat and immediately evokes a happy sensation when you hear it. It never slows down enough to lose its edge throughout the entire song. Even the transition between the two artists does not slow down enough to lose the listener. It keeps your foot tapping the entire time. The tempo changes mildly between the verses and chorus, but it is fairly subtle. The verses are slightly slower than the chorus.

Lyrics

The lyrics tell the story that holds the attention of the audience. The music on its own is catchy and would be good listening without the lyrics, but the lyrics are what keeps the listener interested. The upbeat tempo and instrumentals attract the listener and once they are hooked they start to listen to the lyrics and realize that the scenario is something they understand. It draws on their personal experiences and emotion. This song is mostly a love song, so it is highly likely that people hear it and automatically think of someone, which could be good or bad. Either way it is something they understand and feel personally.

Dynamic

The dynamic of the song ebbs and flows to keep the listener intrigued. The instruments are reasonably quiet for most of the verses, but begin to build at the end and then a crash of cymbals leads into the chorus. As the instrumentals change so does the singer’s voice. He also builds up at the end of the verses and gets louder during the chorus. Both come down at the end of the chorus as well.

Melody

There is an underlying acoustic guitar that holds the melody steady for duration of the song. Even when the sound changes the guitar is still there holding the melody for the rest of the song in the verses and chorus. It is slow and simple but still enough to keep the song upbeat.

Harmony

The melody blends with other sounds in the song to harmonize in way that is stimulating to the listener. The artist uses a combination of instrumentals, auto tune, and vocals to create a beautiful sound that makes you want to bop along or dance to.

Review

Billboard wrote, “The result is a jam perfectly fit for summer festivities (or ‘chasing the person you want to be with,’ which the band said was the song’s inspiration).”  Even though it doesn’t feel like summer here in Fairbanks, AK, you can definitely add this one to your playlist while at the lake or in the back yard BBQ-ing.

Musical Analysis #1-“Body Like a Back Road”

Country is my feel good music. From being in the shower and singing at the top of my lungs, to getting ready for girls night; this helps me get that pep in my step. Dancing is one of my favorite things to do, and two stepping is my top choice. This song has it all for me.

Body Like a Back Road by Sam Hunt. Written by Sam Hunt, Zach Crowell, Josh Osborne, and Shane McAnally. Released February 1, 2017, USA.

Beat and Tempo

The beat and tempo of this song match, which in my opinion makes it easier to dance to. Even though I love to dance, I am not very good. My friends tell me that I tend to gallop instead of glide, but I don’t let that stop me from having a good time. My mind tends to focus on the one-two-three count, which may be the culprit to my galloping, or I am just actually terrible.

Rhythm

The rhythm is so pleasant. It’s is very easy to find myself swaying within a couple second of the song playing. I don’t know if any of my classmates have seen those videos challenging people to not have any reaction to a list of songs, but this would be my kryptonite. I couldn’t keep myself from tapping along or even humming. The rhythm just soothes my soul. The lyrics not so much. It helps me get to a happy place if I just got off work and had a horrendous day.

Form

Like most “pop” songs today, this song has a musical introduction, bridge and outro. It starts out with a musical introduction and jumps right into the first verse. In the end it fades as an outro. What I appreciate the most about this song is the message of just taking it slow. I can get so caught up in the stress of life and school, but in the words of Sam Hunt himself,  “doin’ 15 in a 30, I ain’t in no hurry I’ma take it slow just as fast as I can.”

This song wasn’t greatly appreciated or even liked by true country music fans, but it was still was considered a very popular country song for 2017. I can understand both sides opinions though. I would even agree that this song isn’t technically country, but it still doesn’t stop me from loving it!

What Music Means to Me.

Hello my fellow classmates. My name is Stacey and I am currently pursing a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a long term goal in medicine. Women’s Health is where I see myself practicing in the future. I currently work in the health care setting in Fairbanks.

I have lived in Fairbanks my whole life, but I try to get out and travel. The most exciting place I have been is South America. It was a great experience to see penguins one day and lounge on the beach the next day.

Even though I do not play any musical instruments, I feel like music is food for the soul.  It can serve as a time machine, help recall memories, or even just get you into a good rhythm for running or yoga. Music is such a powerful tool and can be used to influence behavior and emotions.

Just like music, art work can be interpreted differently by everyone. This was Frida’s interpretation of being forced fed by her doctor.

Painting by Frida Kahlo
1945

This is a song that is standing out to me today. Hope you all enjoy.
